Konecranes wins charge crane order from a major North American steel producer

May 19, 2015 (Springfield, OH) – Konecranes will supply two charge cranes to service a new electric arc furnace now under construction.

A major North American steel producer has selected Konecranes to provide two traditionally designed 225-ton charge cranes for an expansion building. Konecranes is a leading provider of lifting equipment for the steel industry, fielding the largest team of industrial crane service professionals in the world. One crane will ship in December of 2015, with the second scheduled to ship in February of 2016.

The two cranes, which will operate as a primary and a backup, will be built at Konecranes process crane factory in Houston, TX. Konecranes group in West Allis, WI will provide engineering for the cranes.

“These cranes exemplify the robust traditional style preferred by some American steelmakers, but substantially evolved to include state-of-the-art Konecranes AC drives and controls,” says Konecranes Vice President, Process Duty Cranes Juergen Gieske. “Standout technologies that the customer wanted include variable frequency drives and Konecranes sway control system as well as semi-automation target positioning capabilities.”

Since Konecranes acquired Morris Material Handling and the P&H® crane line in 2006 the company has continued to build that heavy-duty style of crane for customers that prefer it. The two cranes in this order are near-duplicates. Both are rated at 225 tons for the main hoist with two auxiliary hoists rated at 65 and 15 tons and a 98-foot span, operating on the same runway. Minor differences between them include a magnet appliance on one, while the other has a third hook on the charge bucket’s spreader beam.

“We were very pleased to be selected for this project,” said Juergen Gieske. “Konecranes won the order in a competitive bid process including several other potential suppliers. This order demonstrates that we are trusted to build whatever scope or style of crane the customer requires.”
